Some sleepy heads were jolted awake on Day 3 with a one and a half hour crash course in ICR and Orbitrap Mass Analyzers by Dr. David Kilgour. In 2025, the inventor of the ICR Mass Analyzer, Alan Marshall, sadly passed away. We were fortunate enough to have Alan join us as invited faculty in previous editions of MSBM, and as part of the morning shared an insight into Alan’s legacy by watching An Inventor’s Story: Dr. Alan Marshall.

Prof. Oliver Fiehn (UC Davis) gave our second -omics talk of the week, with an introduction to metabolomics. After, it was acronyms galore for our first lecture from Prof. Garry Corthals, who introduced students to ambient ionisation sources, namely ELI, SAWN, DESI and DART. Our final lecture of the day, and finishing an -omics hattrick for the week was Dr. Laura Bindila (University of Mainz) with an Introduction to Lipidomics.

The afternoon saw our annual trip to the beautiful island of Lokrum. After a 10 minute ferry, students and faculty armed with their sack lunches were met by an army of peacocks. The annual volleyball competition – Faculty vs Students was dominated by faculty*. The intense waves on the south side of the island saw us retreat to the north side for a much calmer swim and bake in the sun.

The evening saw students venture into Dubrovnik’s Old Town, and the faculty heading to Fratello’s for a dinner to thank them for sharing their expertise and their hard work helping students throughout the week.
